Mt Abriel Group Hike March 29.26

Simone H and Michele N lead a group of 7 hikers on an early season walk around the lower Mt Abriel loop, from the main parking lot to the swing and overlook near Cape Horn. It was a beautiful but cool day, with lunch or snacks on a log on the beach!

Hazard Tree Removal Nakusp Hot Springs Trail April 20 - 22

True North Forestry’s faller Jason T spent three hard days falling hazard trees on the Nakusp Hot Springs Trail April 20 to 23.26, assisted by Nellis Sargeant on Monday, Carol H on Tuesday and Jamie D on Wednesday, and Bob T on all three. Jason was very impressive, expertly selecting the most dangerous of the dead snags and overhangs, falling them where they would do the least damage to standing trees or the trail. Awesome. We lost track of how many trees came down, but it was lots. The assistants had the easy job, mainly guarding the trail and helping roll off some of the falls. The trail is safer than it was, but must still be used at the hikers own risk. There are still many hazard trees left that in windy conditions could pose a threat. We got the worst of the worst.

The feature photo is of Jason, Carol and Bob. Sorry to Nellis and Jamie for not getting a photo of them!

Wilson Falls Group Hike Sunday April 19.26

Thirteen early season hikers, both regulars and new-joiners, hiked to Wilson Falls on a beautiful Sunday, April 19.26. The access road off the Wilson Lake FSR was impassable due to uncleared falls and snow, so we walked parked west of the FSR and walked up an extra 700 m to the Trail Head. The falls were thundering and the creek level high, so we didn’t get up to the scary fall overlook ledge, although at least one of us would have really liked to. We had lunch  and snacks in the mist above the river. It was a great, short hike!

Lower Nakusp Hot Springs Trail Survey April 11.26

Corinne T and Bob T surveyed the lower Nakusp Hot Springs Trail for falls and hazards on Saturday April 11.26. We found 22 falls or lodged trees. Some have been cleared since, with the rest to be done soon. All can be stepped over of under or walked around. There was obvious damage to the trail and crossings by an aggressive e-bike (MTB or dirt?). Please, this is a hiking trail. All forms of motorized biking are not allowed!

Clearing Upper Nakusp Hot Springs Trail April 8.26

Frank K, Jamie D and Bob T spent the day clearing the upper half of the Nakusp Hot Springs Trail on Wednesday, April 8.26. Frank did a great job running the chain saw! We cleared numerous falls and a big tangle of multiple trees and branches. We stopped when we ran out of batteries, both our own and for our e-saw. It was a good day.

Peter Roulston Trail Survey April 11.26

Michele N and Bob T surveyed the Peter Roulston Trail for deadfall on April 11.26. They found 16 falls, all small and easy to step over, under, or around. These will be cleared in the next couple of weeks. The trail is hikeable in the mean time.

Jackrabbit Winter Hike February 22.26

Ten hopeful snowshoers enjoyed a beautiful day winter hiking to the Tandy Cabin via the Jackrabbit Trail on Sunday, February 22. There was snow in the woods but none on the trail so we donned hiking boots and grips for the slippery sections. We had lunch and snacks on the Taddy Cabin porch. Thanks to Frank Kennedy for secretly clearing the trail before the hike and the Arrow Lakes XCountry Ski Club for maintaining and repairing the cabin.
