Caribou Creek Hike Sunday May 31 Cancelled
Our Caribou Creek Hike has been cancelled due to high water flow. One of the smaller bridges Gary built has been partially swept away. The main log bridges we were going to cross are still OK but conditions aren’t safe for a public group hike. We will reschedule it for sometime next month when things improve.
Cape Horn Group Hike Monday May 18
18 hikers, including little baby Everette, braved the elements and challenging terrain of Cape Horn, 14 km north of Nakusp on May 18 for a lovely day, enjoying stunning views and good hiker-bonding. Actually neither the elements or terrain required much bravery. It turned out to be a beautiful sunny day and the trail short and easy, except for a few steep sections. We chatted, ate our lunches together or apart, and had a good time.
Nakusp Hot Springs Trail Clearing May 14.26
Brian W, Graham F and Frank K spent a day clearing the lower half of the Nakusp Hot Springs trail, shoring up crossings, improving crossing traction where needed, and hand excavating a root ball slump across the trail. They cleared some left over winter falls and a few that were left by the hazard tree removal work a couple weeks before. It was a good, productive day of work.
Caribou Creek Trail Tour and Hike May 13
Gary Mentz, the Burton trail master builder, gave Bob T & Corinne along with local hiker Denice M a 10+ km tour of the Caribou Creek and Millar Falls trails. Gary, with some help from local legend Doug has scouted out, cleared and built bridges to create a lovely loop trail in the woods and a side trip to spectacular Millar Falls. We can highly recommend the loop trail but the Millar Falls side trip is best left to serious scramblers with good tolerance for heights and steep pitches. Hats off to Gary and his supporters for a job well done. The log bridges alone are worth the trip!
Peter Roulston Clearing Monday May 11.26
Frank K and Bob T had N easy day of clearing the Peter Roulston trail from Gardner Creek to the upper Trailhead, or close to it. Nothing was too big or difficult for Frank to handle with ease! Bob was the mule and brusher, as usual. Dinner Creek to Gardner Creek had already been cleared by helpful, unknown users. The trail is clear and in good condition.
Box Lake Nature Trail Tour May 7.26
6 NACTS directors (Bob t, Graham F, Michele N, Cedr E & Frances S) and Skye C, the interpretive sign designer, met at the Box Lake campground for a tour of the planned nature trail upgrade. We carried the large eco-system info signs and smaller flora species signs along the trail to choose suitable mounting locations. The signs look great, thanks to Frances, Sky and Barb C, who provided key inspiration for the project. Now it is over to the post preparation and hole digging team to complete the project.
Apologies to Frances and Skye, the two most important people of the outing for missing them in the photo!
Kuskie Trail Group Hike May 3.26
Seven hikers including new mom Veronica and 3 month old Baby Everett, lead by Simone and Michele, enjoyed a perfect weather day hiking the Kuskie Trail from the Vickie’s View Hot Springs Road parking lot down almost to the Highway 23 bridge at Nakusp, and back up, about 8 km. All except mom and baby who climbed a steep bank to complete the one way hike to their car at the bridge. The trail was in great shape and a good choice for a close in hike through the woods along the Kuskanax River.
